Etsy Free Shipping Pricing: Keep Your Profit

Pricing guide · Reviewed October 26, 2026 · USD

Free shipping removes the buyer’s shipping charge, not your postage bill. For the same one-item order, moving the old shipping charge into the item price preserves revenue. It preserves modeled profit only when costs, fee rates, discounts and buyer tax stay the same.

Three ways to price the same order

Here is an illustrative handmade order, not a carrier quote or a sales forecast: materials cost $8, postage costs $4 and labor costs $3. The original item price is $30 with $5 charged for shipping. Gift wrap, buyer tax, other costs and advertising are zero.

Assume a US bank account using Etsy Payments in USD. We allocate $0.20 for one listing, apply a 6.5% transaction fee and apply 3% plus $0.25 for payment processing. Percentage fee components round half up to cents in this model.

One item per order: three pricing choices
AmountPaid shippingAbsorb shippingReprice item
Item price$30.00$30.00$35.00
Buyer shipping charge$5.00$0.00$0.00
Seller revenue$35.00$30.00$35.00
Modeled Etsy fees$3.78$3.30$3.78
Materials + postage + labor$15.00$15.00$15.00
Contribution profit$16.22$11.70$16.22

Keeping the $30 item price while removing the $5 shipping charge reduces contribution by $4.52. It does not fall by the full $5 because the modeled fees also fall by $0.48. Raising the item price to $35 restores the original contribution under these assumptions.

Move the shipping charge, not automatically the postage cost

In this example the buyer paid $5 for shipping, but postage cost $4. Adding only the $4 postage cost to the old item price produces $34 revenue, $3.68 in fees and $15.32 contribution. That is $0.90 below the original result.

Same-revenue item price = old item price + old buyer shipping charge

This identity preserves the old result; it does not prove the old price was profitable. If packaging, labor or an expensive delivery zone was missing from your costs, calculate a new target price instead.

Reproduce the comparison in the calculator

  1. Open the profit calculator and select the Handmade example.
  2. Check item price $30, shipping charged $5, materials $8, postage $4 and labor $3. Leave tax, gift wrap, ads and other costs at zero for this example.
  3. Select Save scenario to retain the $16.22 baseline on this browser.
  4. Set Shipping charged to $0. Keep Postage / fulfillment at $4. The estimated contribution becomes $11.70.
  5. Change Item price to $35 and save the comparison. Contribution returns to $16.22.

Use your actual fee rates and costs for a real listing. These instructions do not modify your Etsy shop.

Price for a target instead of copying the old result

Suppose you want $15 contribution from the same item with free shipping. Use the reverse profit calculator, select Target dollar profit, enter $15 and set Shipping charged to zero. Keep the $15 total costs and the fee assumptions above.

Approximate price = (costs + target profit + fixed fees) ÷ (1 − percentage fees)
($15 + $15 + $0.20 + $0.25) ÷ (1 − 0.065 − 0.03) ≈ $33.65

The exact cent-based calculator returns $33.65: fees are $3.65 and contribution is $15.00. At $33.64, contribution is only $14.99. The shortcut assumes zero tax and advertising and no other charges; use the calculator for its supported fee overrides and rounding. For the price that only covers costs, use the break-even calculator.

Check the cases a single order cannot answer

Does free shipping guarantee more sales?

No sales increase is assumed here. A higher item price can affect buyer decisions. Compare contribution per order and completed orders over comparable periods, allowing for changes in traffic, discounts and product mix. A better conversion rate alone does not establish higher total profit.

Etsy’s free-shipping guarantee is a separate shop setting for qualifying US orders of $35 or more, including baskets. This guide’s one-item comparison does not model that entire program. Check your shipping profiles and Etsy’s current instructions before changing the setting.
